Tropea and the surrounding area
The Coast of the Gods
The Coast of the Gods means 40 kilometres of beautiful coastline with amazing white beaches, bays, coves, cliffs, and unique views and sunsets. This is one of the most popular holiday destinations every year for people from all over the world.
Tropea, The Pearl of the Tyrhennian Coast, is the most renowned town along the Coast of the Gods. Not only will you be captivated by its crystal clear sea water and beautiful beaches, you will also be charmed by its hospitality, its narrow streets full of life, lovely terraces which serve as viewpoints, and its excellent restaurants where you can taste local cuisine. On a clear day, you can even see the Aeolian Islands: Stromboli, Panarea, Salina, Lipari, Vulcano, Filicudi, Alicudi.
At some point during the last week of April and the last two weeks of August, with a bit of luck, it is also possible to watch the sun set inside the crater of Stromboli.
Tropea and its origins
Tropea goes back a very long time and was subjected to several invasions by the Normans, the Romans and the Byzantines. As well as being able to admire the coastline, you can visit the elegant historic centre which remains unchanged even after the aforementioned invasions. The beautiful cathedral is of Norman origin. The views of the coast and sunsets are breathtaking. There are various panoramic viewpoints in the town, but four are of particular interest: Largo Villetta, from which you can see the Aeolian Islands; Largo Migliarese, with its famous view of the island and Santa Maria church; Largo Galluppi which overlooks the harbour; Largo Duomo which offers a splendid view of the area surrounding Tropea.
The symbol par excellence of Tropea is without a doubt Santa Maria church which is situated on a crag facing the town. In the past it was completely surrounded by water, hence the word “island” (isola) in the name Santa Maria dell’Isola. This is definitely one of the most beautiful sights in the whole of Calabria.
The nearby area
There are some lovely little towns and villages near Tropea. Starting from Nicotera, you can go on to Pizzo Calabro with its beautiful panoramic viewpoints, famous Tartufo ice cream, and its characteristic church Chiesa di Piedigrotta.
If you want to spend a relaxing day on the beach, head off for Capo Vaticano which is renowned for its beautiful bays and cliffs.
There are daily boat trips, leaving from various points along the coast including Tropea, to the Aeolian Islands. Trips to other towns are also organized, as well as diving and boat trips. You can hire cars and scooters at any time.
Culinary traditions
There are many culinary traditions here in Calabria, thanks to the numerous populations leaving their mark. In summertime, villages and towns proudly hold local food fayres and festivals.
Tropea is therefore not only sea and beach – it is also full of wonderful restaurants serving delicious fresh fish and local products and produce. The sweet red locally-grown onions are well-known everywhere and must be tasted!
